It was an impressive evening of glamor and theatrical splendor inside the Theatre at Ace Hotel for The 29th Annual LA Stage Alliance OVATION AWARDS. The awards recognize the best in theatre from 110 different eligible producing organizations in the greater Los Angeles area judged by a professional peer group of 277 Ovation Award Voters.
The evening was hosted overall by The Kilroys, an LA-based collective of playwrights/producers, continuing to fight to achieve gender balance in the American theatre – and they used the platform to infuse the night with a mixture of humor and education surrounding their theme of #biasbash.
Center Theatre Group also used the evening to announce the winner of the recipient of the 2019 Dorothy and Richard E. Sherwood Award, which honors innovative and adventurous LA theatre artists. This year’s selection was the performance artist, comedian, writer, and activist, Kristina Wong, who delivered one of her usual humorous and crowd-pleasing speeches during the acceptance.
“A Noise Within” theatre company won for overall Best Season with a series of plays that emphasized a theme of “courage” in daunting times.
The evening was filled with several “big winners” with multiple awards going to the productions: Center Theatre Group “SOFT POWER” by David Henry Hwang; “KAIDEN PROJECT: WALLS GROW THIN” by Rogue Artists Ensemble (co-produced with East-West Players); “GRAIL PROJECT” by Theater Movement Bazaar at Bootleg Theater; “PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT” by Celebration Theatre and more…
